Harry Houdini escaped from prison cells, swallowed needles, and made elephants disappear. At the age of nine, he made his circus debut by performing a trapeze act and going by the stage name of “Ehrich, the Prince of the Air.” At twelve years old, Houdini performed his first disappearing act - though not on any stage - by running away from home. Houdini was buried, without a casket, in a pit of earth six feet deep. The first was near Santa Ana, California in 1917, and it almost cost Houdini his life. Below the bridge, many more people had gathered in rowboats, canoes, and even rafts. Throughout his career, Houdini (born Erik Weisz Ma October 31, 1926) performed three variations on a Buried Alive stunt/escape. Eventually, Houdini and the crowd, which had now grown to nearly 10,000 people, reached the stone bridge that crossed the Charles River. During this time, young Houdini helped to support his family by selling newspapers and shining shoes. But it was his skill as an illusionist for which he became known as one of the most famous magicians of all time. Despite only living to the age of fifty-two, his résumé included such titles as a circus performer, aviator, actor, and writer. But Houdini knew his only 'secret powers' were hard work and imagination.
